The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Dallas/ Fort Worth 3-Day began at Ameriquest Field in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, on Friday morning and ended at City Hall in Dallas on Sunday afternoon. My family has been very blessed in that we have not anyone diagnosed with breast cancer, but a few family friends have been. Mrs. Leverington is a survivor and such a marvelous woman, but Mrs. Tooley fought a very long and rough battle and in the end, her body was not able to continue the battle. My mom walked for her. I did this for me.
I was a member of the Gear and Tent Crew and my mother and “favorite” aunt were walkers. Mom walked all 60 miles, I am so proud of her. Being on the Gear and Tent Crew was a real challenge, but the experience was so rewarding. It was our job on the crew to look silly and inspire the walkers. The Gear and Tent Crew did such a good job at inspiring the walkers that we won the “Most Spirited Crew” award.
Oh, and I even managed to lock myself in a porta-poty on Friday. Go me.
Michael, the driver to my navigation on Truck “I” sent out this really sweet email to all of us saying what he had learned over the weekend. I thought I would share what he had to say about me:
- Michael
- “I learned that Kate is an art history major at U-North Texas who someday just might be a lawyer specializing in intellectual property law (I’m not even smart enough to know what that is), she has good taste in music and she can dance while seated in a rented truck with the best of them, and her dimples just melt my heart. Kate’s mom and aunt were walkers, strengthening my theory that a good soul is hereditary.”
Yeah, my dimples can be pretty deadly.
After we had unloaded the trucks at Camp Two on Saturday, I was laying on top of some bags by Truck E taking a nap when I was rudely awakened by someone sitting on me. I had no clue who it could be. Then I opened my eyes and it was lil’ brudder shaking me saying “Katy Katy! Let’s go see what Santa brought us!”
You can read my Livejournal for more details about my 3day adventure. Some of the things I said above were acutally taken from that entry. It really was incredible and I would do it again in a heart beat. Last night Jessica said that we should walk it next year. I’m always up for a good challenge.
I’ll be putting pictures up as soon as I can! I didn’t take my digital camera, so I have to wait for the film to be developed. Here’s one of me, my aunt Susan, one of our team members, Teri and my mom while we were waiting in “holding” to go to the closing ceremonies. Kodak was one of the major sponsors of the walk.
