2007 Oscars.

And the winner is.
The list of nominees has been announced and the countdown to the 2007 Oscars has officially begun. I think I’ve seen maybe 6 of the movies that have been nominated, which is really sad considering that my family is full of movie watchers. Movies are all we talk about when we get together. I’m slacking off in my old age. I guess my life is just getting in the way.
First and foremost, I was very excited to see that Will Smith had been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work as Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness. I really enjoyed that movie, and I believe that he did a fantastic job. Of course, I can’t talk about the movie without mentioning his son, Jaden, who played his on-screen son in the movie.

Chris Gardner: [about the spelling mistakes in the graffiti of a building] It’s not “H-A-P-P-Y-N-E-S-S.” Happiness is spelled with an “I” instead of a “Y”
Christopher: Oh, okay. Is “Fuck” spelled right?
Chris Gardner: Um, yes. “Fuck” is spelled right but you shouldn’t use that word.
Christopher: Why? What’s it mean?
Chris Gardner: It’s, um, an adult word used to express anger and, uh, other things. But it’s an adult word. It’s spelled right, but don’t use it.
There is one category where I have seen all the movies. It’s sort of embarrassing, but I have seen every one of the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film. I believe I saw them over the Christmas/New Year Holidays, two in one day! The nominees are Monster House, Happy Feet and Cars. I fell asleep during Monster House. It was a big boring, kind of scary and I was tired. Sleeping was more important at that point than watching the movie. Before seeing Monster House, I went with Shorty to see Happy Feet. Despite the fact that the penguins were waving their tongues all over the place in a slightly disturbing manner, I thought the movie was cute. For the first half. Then it went all tree hugger on me and I was annoyed. No wonder Shorty saw that movie 6 or so times in the theater. Get ‘em while they’re young I guess. Then there is Cars. I heard all the hype, saw all the advertising and was only slightly amused by the movie. Disney has done better, but it’s the lesser of the three evils and when it comes down to it, has a good message. So, go Cars!
As far as the other categories go, the only other nominated movies I have seen are The Departed, The Devil Wears Prada, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Marie Antoinette. All of which I enjoyed with the exception of Marie Antoinette, which was only nominated for Best Costume Design. The costumes are about the only part of the movie I did like. I can’t cast a fair vote. It’s like voting for a politician based on how much they advertise.
Yes, I went there.
