$200 Jeans.
Jan 25th, 2007 by Kate
I used to think it was ridiculous to spend a large amount of money, I’m talking more than $40, on a pair of jeans. That was before I bought my Sevens. Yes, I bought a pair of designer jeans with a three digit price tag. Why? Because I’m an adult now and can afford such luxuries? Ha, I wish. The truth is, I worked my eBay magic and got them for about $40 bucks, and I’d do it again. And again and again.
So what makes women shell out the big bucks on designer jeans? A recent article on a fashion related blog I frequent titled What exactly makes premium denim so premium? says the answer is fit — that, and fabric. And I am a believer. “Premium jeans are almost always created exclusively from Japanese or Italian denim (read: softer, hand-finished washes) and contain at least 2% stretch fibers. The stretch fibers are then specifically positioned in the thighs, hips, and seats of the jeans, allowing for the perfect amount of give where women typically need it most, but preventing unwanted bagginess overall.”
That quote makes me think about the difference between what used to be my favorite jeans, the now discontinued ‘favorite-cut’ from American Eagle, and my amazing Seven Jeans. The gal pal and I call them the hot jeans because they make my butt look amazing. They hug me in all the right places, fit me like a glove really, and the secret? The stretch fibers! I remember wearing the AE jeans to work, and then putting on the Sevens to go out and noticing a real difference in the fit. The AE jeans were comfortable, but stiff and still in the post-washing breaking in process. The Sevens fit the same right out of the dryer or if they haven’t been washed in a couple weeks. (Yes, I do that. Get over it.)
- A few denim facts from the February 2007 issue of Real Simple, (and my comments):
- The American woman owns an average of 7.74 pairs of jeans. (4)
- Women wear jeans 3.94 days a week. (Uh, more like 5.)
- The average weight of a pair of size 8 jeans is 1.4lbs. (Now I don’t feel so bad when I get on the scale…)
- 81 percent of women say that once they find a pair of jeans they like, they wear them until they’re no longer wearable. (Yes.)
- Survey says that the most important thing jeans can do is make a woman’s bottom look good. (Why do you think I love my Sevens?!)
The Styledash article also notes that jeans have moved up, and these days can be worn anywhere. I’ve worn them on dates, to work, to the store. Let’s not even talk about how big of a pain it is to even try on jeans. I can think of several, much more enjoyable ways I’d like to spend my Saturday afternoon. I’ll take jeans over a swimsuit any day though. That’s my next mountain to climb, and I’m not looking forward to it.
