Class War: MySpace vs. Facebook
Aug 11th, 2007 by Kate
An interesting article from MSN about how “Affluent kids from educated, well-to-do families have been fleeing MySpace for Facebook since it opened registration to the general public in September, while working-class kids still flock to MySpace.”
I’ve definitely noticed this trend. And I may not be a member of the demographic that this article discusses, but I prefer Facebook to MySpace. The article cites the reason that I believe one is preferred by one group over the other. The fact that Facebook was only open to college students upon its initial launch, while MySpace has been available for everyone I believe is a major influencer on demographic. “Facebook is what the college kids did. Not surprisingly, college-bound high schoolers desperately wanted in. MySpace, meanwhile, is the “cool working-class thing” for high school students getting a job after graduation rather than heading to the Ivy League.”
Another interesting point: have you ever heard a local news story about predators targeting kids on Facebook? Yet we are constantly bombarded by stories about MySpace stalkers.
