Things Happen For A Reason.

Or How We Met, according to me.

Let me set the scene: I’m sitting on the floor in the living room with my roommate watching TV with my computer in my lap. It’s New Years Day, 2008 and every other commercial on the TV is about New Year’s resolutions. Half of those are about finding Mr/Miss right on some nameless dating site. It seems every. other. commercial is mocking my singleness which I had held so dear for the past few years but my gut told me it was time.

So I gave it a shot. I joined one of those nameless dating sites.

A few days passed and I had interacted with a few interesting characters. Nothing noteworthy. One thing I really liked about this dating site was that I could see who had looked at my profile. I was looking through those gentlemen when one caught my eye. I made the first move and sent him a cheesy ice breaker. When I returned home from work, I saw that he had sent me a message. Now normally, I didn’t reply to these messages because you had to spend money and get an account. But again, my instincts told me that I had to do it. So I did. I learned a long time ago to listen to my instincts.

I wrote a reply and sent it off. Of course I checked my computer every ten minutes to see if he had replied back, but he didn’t until the next morning. We continued messaging for a couple days, back and forth every day or so, until he asked for my phone number. Giddy as a school girl I gave it to him and anxiously awaited his call.

I had a busy day at work, it was back in the day when I was working 14-15 hour days because I was one person doing three people’s jobs. I was sitting at my desk working on something when my cell phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number so I figured it could either be him or someone I didn’t want to talk to. I answered. My heart leapt, it was him! Unfortunately, I was still at work and in the middle of something so I couldn’t talk, but I told him I would call him back when I was done.

Three hours later, I was finally finished and headed home. I called him back and promised him I didn’t work this late every night. We talked ourselves to exhaustion and continued on for a few more days until he asked me if I wanted to get together and do something. I was elated! Of course I did!

We got off the phone with tentative plans to do something on Sunday, we just didn’t know what. The next night we decided to meet at a bar and watch my favorite football team play. It was a public place, a must have when meeting someone from an online dating site, we would have something to distract us or be a conversation starter, and if needed, a little alcohol to ease the nerves.

Needless to say, things went off without a hitch even though my team lost. He thought he was too shy and didn’t talk enough, I thought it was the best first date ever, which it was!! We stayed at the bar well after the game was over talking, flirting and enjoying each other.

The rest is history.

[...] Kate has a blog. And her blog is called “That One Girl”. If you know me as That Bride and That Wife then you might understand why I LOVED Kate before I even met her. Putting “That” in front of your name or nickname makes you instantly cool in my book. I’ve had so much fun reading her blog, hearing all about her wedding and how the two of them met. [...]
