The Bolero Trial.
Last week I showed you pictures of beautiful brides wearing boleros. Well, being the crazy-crafty DIY bride that I am, I have decided to attempt to make my bolero myself! I’ve made clothes for myself before. I even made the dress I wore to my eighth grade formal. My grandmother taught me everything I know. I miss the days of spending our afternoons cutting fabric and sewing at her house.
To get started I made a trip to my local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store to purchase a pattern and some muslin to practice on. I figured it’d be best to start with the muslin because I have never worked with lace before, and I wanted to make sure I got the size right. And that’s how they do it on Project Runway. Fierce! (Note: sign up for Jo-Ann’s newsletters to get coupons!!!)
I unfolded the pattern and found the three pieces I needed to make my jacket.
Make that two pieces, my bolero won’t have sleeves. I pinned the pattern to the fabric.
And then cut them out with my nice new sharp scissors.
I pinned the pieces together so I could sew the garment together.
I called my aunt and asked if I could borrow her sewing machine. She told me that it hasn’t been working properly for a while, but if I wanted to tinker with it, I could have it. Well, here is my darling engineer fiance sitting at the sewing machine trying to figure out what is wrong with it. After an hour or so of tinkering, he fixed it!
Because I will be working with lace on the final product, I will most likely be sewing the jacket together by hand. I bought lots of extra lace (also with a coupon!) in case I screw up.
Here I am modeling my trial bolero:

What kind of scissors do you use to cut fabric? Have you found one that does leave little frays? I’d be very interested in whatever knowledge you have in the subject. Good job on the bolero!

Okay, this is just getting ridiculously coincidental. I clicked over from Weddingbee since you’re having your reception at my old school. Now I see that you also have an engineer fiance aaaaand that you also had photos taken by Jenna Cole. Gah!
