  Who's the Best Social Network? Who Won't Last?

  © kid.mercury Tell us who you think the best social networking site is, besides MySpace and Facebook. Do you think it will last another year, two, five?
  
  I like Plurk. It's just really fun to play with. Do I think they'll last a year or two? Maybe, they do have a lot of people who really love being there.
  
  I like Hi5 because they offer so many things to their members. I don't know if they'll last though, unless they start promoting themselves better. They need to somehow get MySpace people to realize that they have a better service.

  MySpace Apps

  MySpace has all kinds of games, tools, polls, wallpapers, jokes and a lot more that you can add to your MySpace profile. There are over a thousand MySpace apps right now. Some of them are the same as the apps on Facebook, some are different.
  
  I guess MySpace finally realized what Facebook was doing right and decided to imitate them. They even have all the basic categories that you'd expect to see. I personally am addicted to Super Slot Machines, mostly because I can play it without having to think go move.

  Keeping Teens Safe on Facebook, 5 Privacy Settings

  © Extra Ketchup Facebook has an enormous amount of privacy settings that you can use to keep safe. There are 5 main ones that I want to tell you about that will help keep your teen safe while they play the day away on Facebook.
  
  Go to the "Privacy Settings" page under the "Settings" link to get started.
  
  1. By clicking on the "Profile" link in the settings page you'll be able to change a large number of privacy settings. Choose the level of privacy you want for your teen.
  
  2. Scroll down the page a little and you'll see a link that says "Edit Photo Albums Privacy Settings", click on this. Now you can change the privacy settings for every photo your teen has on their Facebook profile.
  
  3. Protect your teen's IM screen name, email address, website URL, address and phone number. Go back to the profile settings page and click on the "Contact Information" tab.
  
  4. By starting back at Facebook's privacy settings page click on "Search". From here find "Search Visibility" and choose a setting for that. Then under "Public Search Listing" uncheck the box. This will keep strangers from finding your teen's Facebook profile while doing a search.
  
  5. Also on the "Search" page you'll see something that says "How Can People Contact You". Think about each of these privacy settings carefully and then choose your level of privacy.

  Keeping Teens Safe on MySpace, 6 Privacy Settings

  © lunawhimsy There are 6 main privacy settings that you can use on MySpace to keep teens safe while they browse around and keep in touch with their friends. For all of these MySpace privacy settings you'll need to start in your MySpace account settings page.
  
  * The first two MySpace privacy settings I want to tell you about are in the "Privacy" tab of the account settings page.
  
  1. On the privacy settings page you'll see a whole bunch of privacy settings that you can change. Choose just how secure you want your teen to be.
  
  2. If you scroll down a bit you'll see a photo privacy setting. Uncheck this box if you don't want people to be able to see your teen's photos.
  
  * The rest of the privacy settings I'm going to tell you about are in the "Spam" tab.
  
  3. Where you see "Allow non-friends to send me messages", uncheck this option. This will keep strangers from sending your teen messages.
  
  4. There's another option to make sure anyone asking for a friend request enters their last name and email address. This ensures that your teen already knows people who want to be added as their friend.
  
  5. Where you see "Only friends can add comments to my blog", make sure to check this option. This will keep strangers from adding comments to your teen's profile.
  
  6. There are several privacy settings for things like group invitations, event invitations and IM invitations. Make sure to choose your setting for this too. See full article.

  Ken Gaebler has done some simple quick analysis to determine which states are the most social network active. He admits that his way of making these determinations certainly don't come close to being scientific, but they may give you some insight anyway.
  
  It's no surprise to me that Pennsylvania came in last among the continental states in the first analysis. People around me have only just started getting email addresses in the past two years.

  Plurk Lets You Dress Up Your Page

  Once you get to a level 25 on Plurk you'll be able to add your own design to your Plurk page. If you know CSS you can get started designing your own Plurk page right away. If you don't, try a quick CSS design tutorial to help you get started.
  
  Remember, good taste is a big part of good design. Don't go creating a Plurk page with loud colors that no one can read. This isn't MySpace, it's Plurk.
  
  Jay of Jay's Brainfart says, "Thankfully, you only need to view other people's themes if you visit their timeline page, so if there are some particularly gaudy themes (like a lot of the epilepsy-inducing myspace themes that have the sole purpose of scorching your retinas) you needn't see them."
  
  If you don't want to create your own themes, you can use other people's themes that were created for your use. PlurkThemes.com has a some ideas on Plurk themes you can use. They also tell you how to change the themes to your liking.

  © trekkyandy Think you're safe when opening videos on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, think again. Like you I often open videos from my friends and get a good laugh doing it, but this time it's no laughing matter. Opening one of these videos could cause your computer to get very ill.
  
  It starts out innocent enough with a little message from your friend telling you how you have to see this video, and you click on it. That's when the trouble begins. You're then told you need an upgrade to your Adobe Flash Player and it starts installing. But you're not installing an Adobe Flash Player upgrade at all, you're installing a virus. Before you know it you've been infected.
  
  Don't fall for it. If something starts installing, stop it right away. You shouldn't need to install or upgrade Adobe Flash Player to see YouTube videos. If you think you want to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player anyway, go directly to the Adobe Flash Player download page and download it there instead.

There are over a dozen different modules you can add too. These are things like your photo album, blog, guestbook and forum. Change all the colors on the page, not just the text and background, but also the borders, blocks, headers and footer.

  ButterBeeHappy wants you to be happier. They think they have the way too. Just join the site and add to your "journal of gratitude" 5 happy thoughts a day. They sat this works and that people on the site claim to be happier by joining in.
  
  
  
  Why not. Many of us only focus on the negative things in our lives; too many bills, not enough money, cost of gas. We don't stop to think about all the positives around us. Maybe if we did, we'd all be just a little bit happier. That's where ButterBeeHappy comes in.
  
  ButterBeeHappy is a microblog. That means that you can only post small entries at a time. Once you start posting you may want to see what other people are posting about. It may give you some more positive thoughts to read other people's positive thoughts. Post in any language you want to post in, this is a World Wide Web after all.
  
  If you want to, you can even have your happy thoughts posted on your other websites. ButterBeeHappy has a widget that you can use to have your happy thoughts posted on MySpace, Facebook or any of your other websites. Entries on the site are all linked by keywords. This makes specific happy thoughts easier to find.

  Italian Website For Kids

  Let your kids learn about the Internet in a safe way, that is, if they can read Italian. MyPage.it has just come out in beta and is an entire children's network all in Italian. It looks like they plan on coming out with English and French versions, but not yet.
  
  
  
  MyPage.it was create as a way to let children surf the Web in a fun and safe way. It's designed for kids 5 and up and allows kids the ability to create your own webpage in a way that is fun and funny. Webpages created by the kids will be customizable by something they call kidgets.
  
  Kidgets are online "toys" that the kids can add to their webpages. There are lots of kidgets that the kids can use and more are being added all the time. There are kidgets for drawing, coloring, creating stories and comics, playing games, videos, art, science and a whole lot more.
  
  There's also a parents area on MyPage.it. Using your own operating panel you can monitor what your kids are doing online. Tell it when your kids are allowed online and when they're not. Find out more about these tools by visiting MyPage.it.

  Music, Video, Chat and The Oracle

  Someone on the forum mentioned how much they love PitchBuzz.com, so I went and had a look for myself.
  
  Apparently there are a lot of games you can play on PitchBuzz.com, but I couldn't find them. I did find the Oracle, the link is in the footer of the page. You send her emails with your problems and she posts your question and her answer on the site. There are lots of polls and quizzes on PitchBuzz that you can take. This can be a fun way to pass the time.
  
  You'll also find lots of music and videos you can browse through on PitchBuzz.com. If you need to chat you can go to the forum and chat away, or join a group. Even write your own blog for other people to read.
